Salina, an island for trekking

Trekking 365 days a year on Salina’s peaks, the highest of the Aeolian Islands.

Salina is the second largest island of the Aeolian archipelago by extension, about 27 sq. km. It is also the highest of the seven pearls (the islands forming the archipelago) with its two mountains, "Fossa delle Felci” and “Monte dei Porri", reaching up the 900 meters. These are two extinct volcanoes and are part of a group of six volcanoes, 4 of which are now eroded and indistinguishable. Its old name was Didyme, which means Twins, derives right from the two high peaks.

The current name of the island derives from a pond, located at "Lingua" from which was extracted the salt, which is being still used for the storage of fish and capers.

Salina is divided into three autonomous municipalities: Santa Marina, Malfa and Leni, and into 5 fractions: Lingua, Rinella, Val di Chiesa, Pollara and Torricella.

In various parts of the island there are still traces of post-volcanic activity; among them we can mention the phenomena called "sconcassi", nearby Rinella.

They consist of copious submarine emanation of gases and vapors. Exhalation, when accentuated, also determines the upheaval of the seabed, giving unusual and fascinating hues and colors to the waters.

Thanks to its morphology, Salina has several paths and climbing the mountains will let you alternate both breathtaking views over its small slopes and its crystal clear sea.

All this makes Salina an ideal place for trekking during all the year. In addition, the mild climate and the magnificent scenery make trails that climb the mountains even more exciting, where the Mediterranean Maquis relents graciously to the chestnut trees zone.
