Archaeologists by passion: Eraclea Minoa between archeology and nature
East of the mouth of the river Platani, the ancient city of Heraclea Minoa rises majestically on a plateau. Here taked place of a colony from Selinunte from the sixth century. a.C. It was disputed between Agrakas and Selinunte and then between Carthaginians and Romans to be completely abandoned at the end of the first century. a.c.
Legend has it that the name was attributed to it for the death of the king of Crete Minos came to Sicily to take revenge on the Athenian architect Daedalus, guilty of having favored the wife of Minos, Pasiphae to join with a bull, from which the Minotaur was born. The chronicles tell that here Theron, tyrant of Agrigento, once discovered the tomb of Minos and had returned his bones to the Cretans.
The excavations have brought to light the surrounding walls with their doors, the built-up area of the Hellenistic age and important finds exhibited partly at the antiquarium of Minoa and in the Archaeological Museum of Agrigento.
The splendid amphitheatre with the open staircase to the south confirms the magnificence of the ancient town. Built towards the end of the 5th c. BC, it opens with the cavea, divided into nine sectors with 10 steps, towards the Mediterranean Sea.
Heraclea Minoa was an important center of the grain market, and the Heraclesi built a sea breast to better load and unload the ships. The economy was based on trade, agriculture, sheep farming and fishing.
The fertile soils produced cereals, fruit, wine and oil and the territory was rich in woods and provided a production of wood, while the rich river, which was for the most part navigable, provided a large amount of fish.
The territory rich in Mediterranean vegetation was a habitat for wild boar, rabbits, porcupines and foxes. They worked the dwarf palm, the rush and the shrinkage of the wheat with which they produced baskets.
The site is easily accessible from Agrigento via the SS115 after the junction for Montallegro.
