Sicily a paradise for diving
Sicily for many travelers is synonymous with the sea, but only some know the wonders that this can tell for the presence of a unique and uncontaminated nature, for wrecks and millenary stories, an authentic world to explore so let's get ready the equipment, let's do the briefing before the dive, let’s check the equipment and go down into the blue.
The first destination we will visit, perhaps the one par excellence considered a diving paradise is Ustica. From a geological point of view, Ustica is the remnant of an immense volcano that exploded thousands of years ago in the sea abysses, now extinct and reconquered by nature. This origin of the island, which strongly characterizes it, enriches the natural landscape that can be enjoyed, in all its fullness, from the highest peaks, Monte Guardia dei Turchi and Monte Guardia di Mezzo. The best way to discover this extraordinary environment is to circumnavigate the island by boat, interspersing it with diving where it is allowed (in fact, remember that Ustica is also an important marine protected area where therefore no anthropogenic activities are possible). You can reach places of extraordinary beauty from the boat, such as the Blue Grotto and the Pastizza Grotto, Cala di San Paolo and Punta Galera, here at about 45 meters deep a large and spectacular cathedral cavern opens up.
Between Punta dello Spalmatore and Punta di Megna extends the integral Marine Reserve populated by numerous fish species.
Reaching the basaltic rock Scoglio del Medico, diving can become a unique experience, here, in fact, you can see the largest variety of seabed and animal and plant organisms of the island.
The rock of the Colombaia, near the shoal of the same name, hides a world where the unique Pinne nobilis meet, the colored Gorgonians accompanied by numerous sponges and the famous "Elephant's Ear" sponges.
Also magnificent are the cliffs such as that of Sacramento, Cala Giconi, Punta Omo Morto, and the spectacular precipice on which the lighthouse stands.
But Ustica is also a wonderful submerged archaeological itinerary, between -10 meters and -25 meters, an authentic underwater museum with an exhibition of numerous archaeological finds left exactly where they were found. It is advisable to be accompanied by a specialized guide that you will find directly on the island for this route.
Moving to the Aeolian Islands, here too the experience below sea level is unique. The island of Vulcano offers us other exciting glimpses such as the Archipelago “La Franata”, a dive experience that is recommended to be carried out only in optimal sea conditions, a few tens of meters from the coast of Vulcanello, after a plateau of little interest at a depth between 3 and 10 meters, a rather steep descent begins, the size of the boulders increase with increasing depth and around 45 meters draw a spectacular underwater landscape. Another interesting dive is that of Punta Bandiera, where you dive perpendicular to the coast up to 30 m deep, where the sandy bottom is covered by Posidonia meadows, among the boulders covered with hydrozoans and pennatulae, you can also spot spirographs. The most beautiful dive that the island of Vulcano offers, ideal for underwater photos, is that of the Scoglio Quaglietto, at a depth of 25m a large cave opens where a statue of the Madonna has been placed, here you can meet a large number of prawns, Posidonia Oceanica, Parapandalus, White Bream and Grouper. Capo Testa Grossa is another spectacular itinerary that must be done from north to south in favor of the current, following the rocky wall almost sheer up to 30-35 meters deep, here there are bryozoans, leptosamnia and encrusting sponges, among the rare fish the Chromis Chromis commonly known also as Castagnaola of which we also find the red variety.
There are three dives to do in Salina. Let's start with Punta Tre Pietre, a rather difficult dive site to locate, south-east of Rinella, the reference point are just three small rocks on the water, swimming to the right of a huge and long rock, you reach a stone monolith whose base is located at a depth of 36m, here at a depth of 32m you meet a ceriamthus membranaceus of really considerable dimensions.
Moving towards the Capo Faro area, a dive recommended only for experienced divers and photo scuba divers, at 3.2 miles to the northeast the show starts from 8 meters deep up to 40 meters, here the wonder is represented by the presence of large pelagic fish. Still for underwater photo enthusiasts is the dive at Secca di Punta Perciato, a shoal that develops in length parallel to the coast, consisting of large rocks with a very indented morphology. Here the show is characterized by Oceanic Posidonia, by sponges, by Gorgonia yellow, from moray eels, white breams, and groupers.
We leave the Aeolian Islands and move to another spectacular place for diving enthusiasts. We are on the southern coast of Sicily, in the province of Agrigento, about 8.5 miles from Punta Bianca. The visit of the Concordia wreck begins at a depth of 34 meters and reaches approximately 42 meters. We are talking about the wreck of a late 19th-century merchant ship sunk during World War II. About forty meters long it shows numerous points to penetrate inside. Beautiful for encrustations, spirographs, nudibranchs, conger eels. During the period May / June it is very easy to meet sunfish. Ideal as a training camp for technical diving.
